“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day, they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.”
Acts 2:42–47
What Does Fellowship Look Like Today?
As a society, can we honestly say we are fellowshipping? Have our friendships become virtual—boiled down to likes, comments, and reposts?
As women, we’re told that we need a strong “girl gang” or a village, yet in the same breath, we’re told to be independent and not rely on anyone. Confusing, right? I believe we do need community, but let’s dive into why.
Why Acts 2:42 Matters
The Lord has been bringing Acts 2:42 to my heart again and again. I believe it shines a light on the beauty and importance of Christian community.
This verse tells us that the early church was devoted to the apostles’ teaching, to fellowship, to breaking bread, and to prayer. They met together. They learned together. They ate together. They prayed together. In short, they were doing life together.
They even went so far as to sell possessions to help those in need. "Every day they gathered, with glad and sincere hearts, and their authentic love drew others in. Scripture tells us the Lord “added to their number daily those who were being saved.”
What About Us?
Think about your own circle of friends. If someone looked in, would they say, “I want to be part of that group?” Would they see Jesus? Would they feel loved, challenged, and invited deeper?
Sadly, friendship in our culture often feels shallow—reduced to surface-level niceties. And yet, many of us are yearning for the kind of fellowship described in Acts. You might even believe it isn’t possible anymore. But I want to encourage you: it is.
It begins with you—being vulnerable and willing to put yourself out there.
The Power of Real Community
When we invite people into our homes and into our lives, it’s harder to pretend we have it all together. Believe me—if you came into my house, you’d quickly see I’m not the world’s best cleaner, and it looks very much like children live here… because they do!
Society has placed impossible standards on women, mothers, and wives that we were never meant to carry. Being with other real women allows us to breathe easier and remember: no one is perfect. We are all reaching toward the One who is—Jesus.
An Acts 2:42-47 friendship looks like:
honesty and love
challenge and encouragement
prayer, meals, and tears shared together
sacrifice, vulnerability, and pointing one another back to Jesus
It’s not about perfection. It’s about presence.
My Challenge to You
Take a moment to reflect:
Where are your eyes fixed daily?
What fills your thoughts?
Are you gazing at truth—or at the standards of society?
Do you long for community? If yes—seek it. If not, ask yourself why. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what holds you back.
If you’re part of a church, explore the groups they offer. If you’re not, look for opportunities in your area. Community takes intention, but it’s worth the risk.
Final Word
Be in a relationship with Jesus. Sit in proximity to others.
And watch how much healing, growth, discipleship, and even miracles can take place when we live like the believers in Acts.
